The Band of the Hawk became reknowned in the Kingdom of Midland for their unbeaten battle record. All went according to Griffith's plans, except for one particular castle assault, where the Hawks ran into the Immortal Nosferatu Zodd.
A montrous being, he slayed 50 members of the Hawks, before Guts went in to face him. He managed to land a single blow on Zodd. His terrifying true form was revealed afterwards.
Griffith and the a battalion of the Hawks rushed into the room in an effort to rescue Guts. Guts and Griffith were able to fend off Zodd for a short while, until Griffith was knocked unconscious. As he went to finish Griffith off, Zodd noticed his Crimson Behelit. He instead retreated, leaving Guts with a prophecy.
