Years later, Guts continued to fight, roaming from mercenary band to mercenary band. His traumatic past gave him a crude and cold demeanor, and left him unable to form lasting relationships or trust others.

During a castle raid, Guts challenged and defeated the legendary knight Basuzo. He was rewarded with large bounty and the promise of becoming a squire. Not surprisingly, he took the money, and continued to roam.

He was soon attacked by members of the Band of the Hawk, the mercenaries that were defending the castle Guts helped attacked.

The trio of horsemen saw Guts as easy prey, but his skills easily overpowered them. The second in command, Casca, went to assist her men. She was also overpowred, but saved at the last moment, by the band's leader, Griffith.

In seconds, the battle was over. Griffith handily defeated Guts, gravely wounded him. However, instead of leaving him for dead, Griffith saved him, bandaging his wounds, and requiring Casca to keep him warm at night. Griffith had greater plans for Guts.

Not surprisingly, Guts rejected this offer, which led to a scuffle between the two.
