With the biggest opposer of the Hawks eliminated, Griffith's military genius drove them to victory after victory, eventually leading to their inclusion in the Midland Army. They were sent to recover the Chuder stronghold of Doldrey, to end the 100 year war between the two kingdoms.

Guts defeated the defending army's general, and Griffith's plan of a diversion allowed for the conquest of the castle. The Hawks returned home to Midland's capital, and Griffith began his plan for ascension.

In the short time that Guts was with the Band of the Hawks, the group's esteem and prowess began to soar. They earned the favor of the king of Midland, and Griffith himself earned the favor of the princess. Guts was aware of Griffith's dream to rule, and assisted him when possible.

The Hawks were increasingly given favorable duties, among with included protecting the royal family during the annual hunt. The established nobles and generals, of whom the duty was traditionally given to, began to plot against Griffith. They viewed his rise, as a common born man, heretical to their social heirarchy.

They attempted to assassinate Griffith during the hunt, but their plan backfired. Not only did he survive the poisoned bolt, but it allowed Griffith to determine the nobles plotting against him. He sent Guts to kill Julius, the king's brother, and orchestrator of the attempt.

The Hawks returned to the capital as heroes. Griffith was knighted, and in a position to eventually marry Charlotte. The Hawks were finally victorious, and everything seemed perfect, until late one snowy night.
