Born under a tree of corpses, Guts was rescued by the leader of a mercenary band, Gambino, and his lover Shisu.
After the death of Shisu, Guts, aged 3, was brought into the brutal mercenary life by his adoptive father. He trained him in swordplay, and brought him along to assist in battle.
Guts enlists in the mercenary band at age 9. He kills a man in his first battle, but the night after, is raped by another mercenary. The man, Donovan, swears Gambino sold Guts to him, but Gambino feigns ignorance the next day. Guts exacts his own revenge during the next battle, killing Donovan.
During this same battle, Gambino is gravely injured, and his leg is amputated. For the next two years, Guts provides for Gambino, who begins drinking himself to death.
One night, in a drunken rage, Gambino attacks Guts in his tent. He tells the truth about Donovan, as well as his true feelings about Guts. Guts realizes that the closest thing he had to a father had despised him all along; Guts kills Gambino, and flees the camp.
